Army General Runs Into The Bush For Fear Of Boko Haram, Faces Arrest In Abuja

Whenever Boko Haram is coming, people run for their dear life. But when Army General who is leading a troop that should confront them, decide to scamper into the bush, then something is wrong.

There were indications that the Army High Command has ordered the arrest and detention of a Brigadier-General attached to the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army over allegations of negligence that gave Boko Haram terrorists an opportunity to overrun some communities in Borno State recently.

The senior officer who hails from one of the states in the South, was the officer meant to coordinate military onslaught to dislodge several Boko Haram terrorists from Bama, Gwoza, Madagali, Michika and other communities in Borno and Adamawa states that later fell into the hands of the terrorists.

The General was accused of providing poor leadership and failed to instil confidence in soldiers, resulting in many soldiers abandoning the fight against the terrorists while several of them lost their lives.

According to the source, when the Boko Haram insurgents came in full force to attack Bama, the top brass of the unit and the General in-charge escaped into the bush.

The source disclosed that the insurgents entered the Brigade Headquarters and Armoury freely and carted away vehicles and Tanks…

Vanguard was told that some of the commanders were rescued from the bush by a battalion deployed at the Konduga area, stationed about 15 kilometers behind Bama, the last deployment before Maiduguri.

The Military high command was said to be furious that the insurgents after taking over Bama and killing a lot of civilians, ransacked the armoury with no soldier offering resistance, leaving the insurgents to have a free day.

According to the source; after seizing the equipment at the 21 Brigade Bama, the terrorists used the same weapons to attack the infantry battalion at Konduga but met their waterloo where hundreds of the Boko Haram insurgents were killed.

The source added that the 21 Armoured Brigade which had several armoured tanks could not withstand the battle that was later decided by less than 400 infantry soldiers in Konduga.

It was further gathered that after running away from Bama, some top brass of the brigade and about 800 troops went straight to Maiduguri instead of joining the troops in Konduga to repel the attack.

To face court-martial
Vanguard gathered that a board of inquiry is investigating the conduct of the officers for acts of negligence among other offences.

Military sources said that Boko Haram terrorists were not really better armed in the terror war but rather leadership of troops on ground has been discovered as a problem that needed to be tackled.

Giving an instance, a source said: “Commanders of troops are supposed to lead soldiers from the frontline but what we discovered is that most of the commanders operate and give orders from the rear.

“If not that our soldiers are rugged and know that the Boko Haram terrorists could not match them professionally, what we are seeing today would have been the opposite.

Actually, when terrorists see soldiers coming, they run for their lives, but due to poor leadership, the back-up arrangements are not activated. When soldiers therefore run out of ammunition and the terrorists regroup, soldiers will have no other choice than to retreat”.

The source cited the successes recorded severally in the battles to take over Konduga as the perfect way the Nigeria Army operates, noting that even though there were four different attacks with heavy weaponry, the army was able to defeat them and recovered stolen weapons.

Mrs Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa, the stepdaughter of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo is set to contest the Lagos governorship elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The stepdaughter of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo is following in his footsteps with a foray into politics.

Mrs Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa is the daughter of Major Moji Adekunle-Obasanjo and Chief Adekunle Tobun and she is set to contest the 2015 Lagos governorship elections.

The intending candidate is currently a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State and she is set to contest on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She spoke about her aspirations in an interview with Tribune Newspaper,

Excerpts below:

How did your parents influence your involvement in politics?

My parents played a great role in my development and my passion for politics. I wanted to study law but found myself studying political science.

My father, Chief Adekunle Tobun’s activities during the Third Republic, when he contested for the gubernatorial primaries and the campaigns then, gave me a lot to learn and think about.

My late mother, Major Moji Adekunle-Obasanjo, gave me all the support and opportunity to utilise my knowledge and, at every instance, continued to boost my self-esteem. I am very lucky to have such great personalities as parents.

Women in politics are often considered as wayward and are often abused by their male counterparts.

How has your experience been so far? What are your regrets?

There is no gainsaying the fact that in our society, women have great obstacles in attaining political positions.

These are socio-economic factors rather than physical.

There have been arguments that women themselves frustrate the chances of their colleagues at securing elective offices, while another argument is that male politicians manipulate the system to the detriment of women.

In many cases, women are discouraged by late night meetings and women who attend have been labeled prostitutes.

I believe, however, that politics is not the only arena where we have wayward women or sexual harassment. It pervades the society; schools, the corporate world – everywhere.

Politics is an aspiration to serve; it is not do or die.

What gives you the impression that the time is ripe for a female governor in Lagos State, given its political sophistication, ethnic heterogeneity and the historical reality of male dominance in Lagos politics?

I could go on and on in answering this. But, I will try my best to summarise the issues.

First, as with any endeavour or responsibility, the eligibility of any individual aspiring for any job or position is measured by his credentials and suitability for the job.

The constitution provides that a person shall be eligible for the office of governor if he or she is a citizen of Nigeria by birth, at least 35 years of age; is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party.

There is no provision for gender discrimination in this article.

Consequently, I believe I even have more than enough requirements for the job.

Women’s participation in politics – not only in Lagos State but in Nigeria – has been very poor due to a lot of factors that have nothing to do with the physical constitution of the female gender.

That is the reason I truly identify with my party, the APC, which has as its slogan, ‘change.’

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, veteran Nollywood Actor, Kenneth Okonkwo has joined the league of other entertainers currently eyeing various political offices.

The star Actor is seeking to represent Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency at the National Assembly on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

President Jonathan Praises Bishop Oyedepo – See What He Said.

President Goodluck Jonathan has praised Bishop David Oyedepo, the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, on his contributions to education in Nigeria.

President Jonathan made this commendation while congratulating Oyedepo on his 60th birthday on Friday, 27 September, 2014, through a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati.

According to the statement, Jonathan stated that the cleric’s “massive accomplishments as a devoted servant of God’’ made his life worthy of celebration.

I write on behalf of my family, the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to rejoice with you as you mark your milestone 60th birthday anniversary.

“Yours is, indeed, a life truly worthy of celebration. You have attained lofty heights not just as an accomplished selfless servant of God, but also in the committed service of community, country, and our common humanity.

“You have not only committed to giving your all in pursuit of the massively impactful propagation of the Word, you have also embraced the cause of providing quality education for our children.

Oyedepo, affectionately called “Papa” by members of his congregation, is reported to be the richest pastor in Nigeria.

The cleric is a Christian author, preacher, the founder and presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church World Wide, also known as Winners’ Chapel, and its affiliated international churches known as Winners Chapel International, with headquarters in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Oyedepo is the senior pastor of Faith Tabernacle, a 50,000 seat church auditorium, reported to be the largest church auditorium in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

He has been seen as one of the pioneers of the Christian charismatic movement in Africa and also referred to as one of the most powerful preachers in Nigeria.

Oyedepo is the Chancellor of Covenant University and Landmark University.

Oba Of Benin Gives Jonathan Highest Royal Attire

The Oba of Benin has done what many consider to be a rare thing to President Goodluck Jonathan today.

Vanguard reports that The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, presented Red Egbeigbe, the highest Benin traditional attire to President Goodluck Jonathan today, Saturday 27th.

‘Red Egbeigbe’ is said to be the royal attire majorly worn by only Benin prince and princess on rare occasion like marriages.

This, Erediauwa deemed fit to give to Jonathan when he paid a courtesy call to the monarch in his palace in Benin City.

The traditional ruler while presenting the royal gift revealed that he often see the president in dark-coloured attire, hence the need to add the royal gift to his wardrobe collections.

Erediauwa however congratulated the president for getting his party’s endorsement for second term.

Earlier, the president had told the monarch that he was in Benin to attend the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South sensitization and unity rally.

President Jonathan who thanked the traditional ruler for the gift, promised to return to the palace when the campaign for his re-election begins.
